CAS Academician SHEN Baogen Appointed Dean of the Physics Department

On May 15th, researcher of the Institute of Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences, alumni of USTC, SHEN Baogen gave a report under the invitation of the School of Physics and was appointed the Dean of the Physics Department. The Appointment Ceremony was held on 2:30 pm. Party Secretary of the School Professor XU Wu, Executive Dean of the School of Physics Professor LIU Wandong, Party Secretary and Vice President of the School of Physics Professor YE Bangjiao, Executive Head of Department of the Physics Department Professor LIN Zijing and part of the faculty body attended the ceremony.

The ceremony was hosted by LIU Wandong, who gave a brief introduction on Professor SHEN and his works and achievements related to Magnetic Physics and Magnetic Materials and showed his appreciation for Professor SHEN accepting the post.

Party Secretary XU Wu presented the appointment papers. In his related speech, he said that there was once a time of prosperity for the study of Magnetism in USTC, such a field cannot be left unattended and especially in USTC, it is with such considerations that the school has appointed magnetism specialist, CAS Academician SHEN the Dean of the Physics Department. He pointed out that, in order to further the studies on Magnetisms, first we need the University Officials to recognize the importance of the subject; secondly, we need to find effective means to truly restore the development of the subject. He hopes that those in USTC who are dedicated to such goals would gain great progress, and realize that this is not only the duty of the School of Physics and the Physics Department, but also the duty of all its faculties. He also hopes that with the guidance of Professor SHEN, the team can regain the glories of the field of Magnetism in USTC and that the school can give its full support to the cause.

In his speech, CAS Academician SHEN Baogen the faculties presented the ceremony. He mentioned that he is a simple researcher who has never left the study of Magnetism since graduation. And as an alumnus, the success and progress of USTC is also his pride. Constant communications between universities and research institutes is not only beneficial to the universities in question, but also to the research institutes. He hopes that he can be such a contact that promotes the interaction between USTC and the Physics Institute Chinese Academy of Sciences, and make the most use of such exchange. He briefly reviewed the history for Magnetism in USTC and believes that with the joined endeavors of the University and its fine faculties, the field would definitely move towards a better future. He also expressed that he will do his best to give his contribution to the cause.

After the ceremony, Professor SHEN gave a lecture on the physics and applications of new thermo-magnetic materials.
