Professor Guo Guangcan elected TWAS academician

  From October 20 to 23,2009, the 20th CAS Congress of The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) was held in South Africa. 50 new TWAS academicians were added in the congress. Guo Guangcan, professor of school of physical sciences, USTC, was elected to the 20th session of TWAS academicians for his outstanding contributions to optics and physics.

 

  Professor Guo Guangcan has long been engaged in the research of quantum optics, nonlinear optics, quantum information and was honored national outstanding teacher. He has educated 65 doctor graduate students, 2 of whom were awarded the National 100 Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation. He has made significant achievements in scientific research, which include more than 420 papers published in international journals such as PRL and PRA, 11 published books such as “Quantum optics “and" optical”. He also won the second prize of the State Natural Science Award, HLHI prize and 2007 Major Technology Achievement Award of Anhui province. He is the chief scientist of the significant project “physical realization of Quantum communication and quantum computing" of the Ministry of Science, the chief scientist of CSA important Program "Preparation, transmission and manipulation of quantum information”, academic leader of Creative Groups of national foundation.

 

    TWAS academicians are elected from the Academy, universities and research institutions of the Third World, as well as scientific organizations in developed countries. All the academicians have made outstanding contributions to scientific development of the Third World.Together with the newly elected TWAS academicians, currently there is a total of 950 academicians, including 141 from mainland of China.
