On January 11, 2009 national conference on science and technology awards was held at the Great Hall of the People.
Party and state leaders Hu Jintao, Wen Jiabao, Li Changchun, Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang, attended the meeting and presented the awards to the winners. “Study on electrical and magnetic behavior of the transitional metal oxides (chalcogenides)” project led by academician Zhang Yuheng from school of physical sciences, USTC won the second prize of State Natural Science Award.

Transitional compounds belong to function condensed matter, which are high-tech materials of great potential value. Research group led by Zhang Yuheng have been dedicated in the research of metal oxides (chalcogenides) for almost 20 years, and made important breakthrough in this field.
State Natural Science Award 2009 awarded a total number of 28 Projects, State Technological Invention Award 55, National Science and Technology Progress Award 282, International Cooperation Award 7. Since the national reform of science and technology award in 1999, USTC was awarded a total number of 6 second prize of State Natural Science Award, 7 second prize of National Science and Technology Progress Award, 1 International Cooperation Award.
