Abstract: One of the major outstanding challenges in physics is to understand the behavior of glassy materials, where competing interactions lead to complex dynamics that span time scales ranging over more than 20 orders of magnitude. Direct simulations of glassy materials will always be slow. But physicists have been learning how to be lazy (i.e., efficient) from computer scientists. Simulations using accelerated methods for spin glass models are giving us deeper insights into the intricate organization of the thermodynamic landscape, chaos (a great sensitivity of the state to temperature), and the remarkable memory effects seen in experiments.
