Prof. CHEN Yuao, a physicist from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), is honored with the 2013 Fresnel Prize of the European Physical Society. The awarding ceremony will be held on May 14, 2013 at the European Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics in Munich, Germany.

CHEN is honored for his outstanding contributions to quantum manipulation based on photons and cold atoms as well as in the field of quantum information and quantum simulation.

CHEN Yuao graduated from USTC, and learnt from Prof. PAN Jianwei since his junior year, which could be considered as the beginning of his scientific research on quantum information processing. During his undergraduate and master study in USTC, CHEN and his colleague constructed the first experiment platform of five-photon entanglement in the world, which established the international leading position in the multi-photon entanglement manipulation for China.

He went to Europe for further study and received his Ph.D in Ruprecht-Karls—Universitaet Heidelberg in 2008. Three years later, as a member of the first batch of "Recruitment Program of Global Young Experts", he returned to carry out research in the field of quantum information processing based on photons and manipulated ultracold atoms.

CHEN has published 38 papers on five first-class international important academic journals, including Nature (4 pieces), Nature Physics (6), Nature Photonics (4), PNAS (1), Physical Review Letters (23). And the science citation index citation times are over 1800. The academics at home and abroad speak highly of his research achievements, one of which was selected as one of ten “News Features of the year” by Nature.

Fresnel Prize, named after Augustin-Jean Fresnel, is regarded as the highest honor for young scientists in the field of quantum electronics and quantum optics. Every two years, two young scientists under the age of 35 would be awarded, one in the field of basic research and the other in the field of applied research.

Prof. PAN Jianwei who has won the prize In June 2005 , is the first Chinese scientist to receive the award. After eight years, at the age of 32, CHEN Yuao after tutor Prof. PAN Jianwei, became the second Chinese scientist to won the honor. The fact that two people with the relation of mentorship from USTC successively won the same prize has become a much-told story.
