Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) published the list of new academicians on Dec. 9, 2011. And Professor PAN Jianwei, a physical scientist in quantum physics from USTC, as the youngest member among all academicians, is on the list.
Mr. PAN, born in 1970, from Dongyang, Zhejiang, China, entered USTC as an undergraduate student in 1987, and got his BS and MS degrees from USTC respectively in 1992 and 1995. After that, he worked as an instructor in the univerisity. One year later, he pursued his doctoral study in the Institute for Experimental Physics of Vienna University and then received his PhD degree in 1999. After two-year postdoctoral research in University of Vienna, he joined in USTC in 2001 as a young professor. In the past years, Pan and his group have published more than 80 important papers, including 10 in Nature, 60 in PRL, 5 in Nature Physics, 4 in Nature Photonics ,and more other high-profile journals.

PAN has long been engaging in the studies of quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum measurement and the foundation of quantum physics. His systematic innovation on the quantum communications and the manipulation of multi-photon entangled states has promoted experimental studies on quantum information as one of the most promising directions in the fields of quantum information physics in recent years.
The newly CAS academicians in 2011 include other six USTC alumni: E Weinan, YUAN Yaxiang, ZHANG Zhaoxi, LI Yadong, SHEN Baogen, and KANG Le. According to a preliminary data, till now, a total of 52 USTC alumni have been selected to be academicians of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering from nearly 60,000 alumni in her 53-year history of the university, which is the top academician-rate comparing with other Chinese universities.
