The Laboratory of Basic Plasma Physics was established in Feb. 2005. Its goal is to concentrate the research efforts of plasma physics in the University of Science and Technology of China, aim at the aspects of the controlled fusion energy and space development and serve for the national strategy demand.

The laboratory relies on the plasma physics and space physics, which both are the national key disciplines in the University of Science and Technology of China. The plasma physics discipline was founded in 1974 and in the same year enrolled the undergraduate students. It was the earliest training department for plasma physics undergraduate students. In 1978 plasma physics discipline started to enroll master students. In 1981 it became the doctoral discipline and enrolled the PhD students at 1984, which firstly formed the complete training, including the undergraduate, master, doctor and post doctor, of plasma physics talents. In 1992, the plasma discipline became the national training base for basic science research and teaching talents, which was excellent in the evaluation organized by the ministry of education in the ninth-five year period, won the second of the whole country (first of the high school) in the evaluation of degree and graduate student education organized by the state council academic degree committee, ranked first in the quality evaluation of doctoral student organized by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, became the station of Cheung Kong Scholars in 1998, was evaluated as the national key discipline in 2001 and ranked first in all the plasma physics disciplines. The space physics discipline was found at the establishment of USTC in 1958, got the doctoral degree conferral right in 1998, was evaluated as the national key discipline in 2001 and was approved to establish the postdoctoral mobile station together with the solid geophysics discipline in 2003.

Now the laboratory has 36 members (including the postdoctors), which includes 2 CAS academicians, 5 winners of the national excellent young scientists funding, 2 winner of the CAS’s ‘One Hundred Talents Project’. 28 members own the PhD degree, accounting for 78%.

The laboratory has achieved a considerable progress in training the talents after established. At the beginning, there was only one CAS academician and one winner of the national excellent young scientists funding. After that, Prof. Changxuan Yu became the CAS academician gloriously. Yuming Wang, Jian Zheng and Quanming Lu won the national excellent young scientists funding at 2005, 2006 and 2007, respectively. In addition, Quanming Lu won the prize of science and technology for young and Yuming Wang won the title of ‘Jianghuai’s Top 10 outstanding young’. In 2006, Xiaofang Wang was introduced, who was supported by CAS’s ‘One Hundred Talents Project’. In 2007, Shaojie Wang was introduced, who won the national excellent young scientists funding before. In 2008, Tao Li was introduced, who was supported by CAS’s ‘One Hundred Talents Project’. The laboratory also improves the training of young backup talents and now 5 postdoctors are absorbed into the mobile station.
